It might be time to see if your flash drives are still working or work with your modern tech. If not, this week is the perfect time to pick up a new one.

I am someone who’s very big on organizing my digital life. I have folders that meticulously sort files and screenshots into neat little sections, and those folders get backed up onmy cloud storage service. Occasionally, I also back up my cold storage. I might be just a bittooserious about it, honestly.

But that does mean I need to grab pictures and videos from other devices to transfer to my PC, and I haven’t done a significant file transfer with my PS5 since I picked it up. you may upload images to the PS App and then download them to your phone. But you can only upload four files at a time, and given I have dozens of screenshots per game, it’s not feasible for me to do that.

There is an easy solution, however: just plug in a flash drive and download them all at once! Whenever I got around to doing so, though, I found that my flash drive didn’t work, at least, not with the extremely limited capacity it had.

It’s a good thing I tried now, though, since Prime Day always has good discounts on digital storage—which, of course, includes flash drives.

Admittedly, I don’t think about flash drives often. I only needed them to grab screenshots off of my PS3; by the time I got my PS4, I was using anexternal hard driveto store everything instead. But I didn’t do the same with my PS5—in general, the console’s online features and backups are good enough to put most of my fears to rest about losing data.

But that also meant all of my stuff wasn’t in one place. How would I find that funny screenshot from a game I played last year? Remember that I took the picture on the PS5? No, that simply wasn’t possible.

This SanDisk thumb drive is a bit pricier than the model I picked, but with 512GB of storage and 1,000MB/s read and 900Mb/s write speeds, the Prime Day price is solid.

However, when plugging my flash drive from my college days (back in 2007), I couldn’t transfer all of my screenshots, let alone my videos, onto the flash drive. The culprit? It only had 4GB of storage. That was a decent size back in the day, but in 2025, it’s notquiteenough for most tasks. It was a miracle the flash drive still worked in the first place, so I shouldn’t have been shocked when it didn’t have enough storage to store much of anything in the current day.

It was time to stop holding on to ancient tech and loosen my wallet to get a flash drive from this decade.

Flash Drives Aren’t All That Different From The Past

The funny thing about flash drives, though, is that they’re not all that different from what they were two decades ago. Sure, you’re getting a lot more storage, and there are now USB-C flash drives to account for the more universal port, but otherwise they’re more or less the same. Flash drives are still small (and in some cases, too small), and still cheap. This really is the type of tech you’ll buy and probably lose in a couple of years—barring some exceptions, of course.

All that said, you don’t need to wait until a sales event to pick up a flash drive, given that most of them are not expensive. But it’s Prime Day, so now is the perfect time to save a few bucks. Better still, you can tend to find deeper discounts on higher-capacity thumb drives, so you can pick up an upgrade without spending much more.

But in the end, I chose theSanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go—a simple 128GB flash drive with both USB-A and USB-C ports. Since my USB-C ports are on the back of my computer tower, I can easily transfer files onto my PC while using the USB-C port for all my other devices. 128GB might still seem small, but it’s enough for all of my screenshots, and they won’t stay on the device permanently. Just long enough for me to put the screenshots and videos in their folders and back them up in three different ways.
