There’s not much in the way of customization outside the color choices.
A 14-Port Device That Covers All The Bases
AUSB dockis only meant to do one thing, and that’s to be a central hub for all of your cords and connections. The Razer USB 4 Dock has 14 ports, so it definitely gets a lot of points in this regard. For all but the most complicated and busy computer setups, it has more than enough ports to support all of your devices. That said, not all 14 ports are USB ports. As you can see, this collection of ports gives the Razer 4 USB Dock a lot of flexibility in what it can do. It can support multiple displays, power and connect devices, and even directly connect microphones or headphones via cord or take in SD cards. It was more than enough to power and connect my entire setup, which includes a laptop, multiple screens, a second keyboard, a mic, and a wireless mouse. I tried out every port I could, includingeach type of USB port, and they all worked just fine.
Of course, exactly what it can do depends on a few factors. For instance, it can only support one 4K display at120Hz, but it can support dual 4K displays at 60Hz. The charging speed varies between some of the ports as well. Overall though, this device does exactly what you’d expect it to. It’s a hub for ports. It has a lot of them, and they work. The only other things to talk about are its size and some other fringe aspects.
The Razer USB 4 Dock is a little longer than half a foot long, but it’s also pretty short, giving it a thin profile. Ideally, it could go under a desk and be out of sight, but it’s small and attractive enough to not be an eyesore if it has to sit out next to your computer, though that might also depend on your personal cord management. It also comes with a hefty power brick that adds a bit more unsightly mass, but that does allow it to power your computer and all of your attachments.
Finally, it comes in a very nice box that is mostly recyclable. In fact, it’s so nice that it’s the type of box I would keep around just to use it for something else. Oh, and the instruction manual is black paper with white text, which is pretty neat.
Should You Buy the Razer USB 4 Dock?
The answer to this question really depends on how much of this thing’s full capability you’re going to use. If you just need a dock with a handful of USB ports, you can find one that is much cheaper than $230. Don’t get me wrong, this dock from Razer is very nice, but if you don’t need half of the ports it is offering for your setup, then it’s just too expensive to justify getting.
On the other hand, if you’d use most or all of the ports offered by theRazer USB 4 Dock, then it’s definitely worth it. It covers a huge variety of uses, looks nice, and can even replace your regular computer charger if need be. I think it’s a worthwhile investment if it’s something you’ll use in its totality, but if it offers bells and whistles you don’t need, I’d go for a cheaper option.
