Apple has released the official iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox to enable fans of Mozilla’s browser to sync and use saved passwords from their iCloud Keychain.

Once installed through theFirefox Browser Add-Ons website, the extension lets you access any saved passwords from your iCloud Keychain, right in the Firefox browser, and use its built-in autofill feature to securely fill them when signing in to websites.

When you create a new login password for a website in Firefox, the extension will automatically save it to iCloud so that you’re able to use it across your other devices with iCloud Keychain set up. On top of that, you can generate one-time verification codes for websites that use two-factor authentication (2FA) as an additional layer of security. The extension makes it a cinch to set up verification codes for a website by right-clicking on a QR code.

For security reasons, all iCloud Passwords extensions require permission to access your iCloud Keychain, and this one is no exception. Selecting a password field on a website will prompt you to enter a six-digit verification code generated by your Mac to authorize access. You must do this once for every browsing session, like when you quit and re-launch Firefox.

There’s just one problem. The extension is currently only available on Mac computers and doesn’t yet support Windows. “The iCloud Passwords extension is compatible with macOS Sonoma or later,” reads Apple’s description. “It is not available for Windows at this time.”

The Firefox extension was originallycreated by an independent developer, whosaysthey transferred the listing to Apple because “it’s better for the community to have an official extension rather than one maintained by a ‘random’ guy.” The developer says the new extension doesn’t use any code from the original project, and is just a simple port of Apple’s official Chrome extension.

Windows PC owners who don’t use Firefox will need to fall back on other solutions until Apple updates the extension to work on Windows. Or, you may want to sync your passwords using the iCloud for Windows app and manage them in the iCloud Passwords Windows app that comes with it.
