Summary

If you’ve been searching for the right kind of Wi-Fi-connected smart light for your yard but have come up short, theGovee Outdoor Lamp Post Lightmight just have you covered. It’s a big, bright way to light an outside space. Plus, its motion and brightness sensors are neat. The Lamp Post lighting effects aren’t unique within Govee’s crowded lineup, but it’s another solid form factor.

Price and Availability

The Govee Outdoor Lamp Post Light is available starting in mid-May and retails for $429.99. It comes with ground stakes, ground screws, and a water bag weight as the various ways to anchor it to the ground. Its power cord is 33.46 feet long.

The Lamp Post Might be Bigger Than You Think

As I unpacked the Lamp Post, my kids were already asking me if it was an outdoor heater or a tetherball pole. I could understand how they might think it was either of those things, too. The Lamp Post is much bigger than I thought it would be from the promo pictures I initially saw. It measures 97 inches tall (8.14 feet).

Still, after I strung the power cable through the multiple segments, screwed them all together, and got the unit up outside, I was pleasantly surprised by its stature. The product is definitely too big for indoors, but it has a good presence in a backyard.

To that point, its base options make it versatile enough to help you place it where it will be the most useful. I have the base resting on the concrete with the included water weight resting on top of the feet. And even though I have a notoriously windy backyard, it’s been just fine without screwing it into the ground.

If you are planning on placing the Lamp Post on grass or dirt, I would recommend using the heavy-duty stakes to secure it.

The Lamp Has Typical Govee Lighting Effects

If you’ve ever used a Govee lighting product, of which there are many, you’ll be familiar with what the Lamp Post can do. It includes effects like static colors, various light temperatures, moving scenes, and the ability to react to music.

The Lamp Post features six light zones with 54 RGBIC LEDs. It also sports a 2,000-lumen peak brightness, which the company says can cover about 840 square feet. The lights are inside an IP66 weather-resistant housing. I kept the Lamp Post up during a few rainy days and didn’t notice any issues from the water. Naturally, I couldn’t test the long-term durability.

There are a few lighting effects that work well with the lamp, moving in a circular motion, but I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more Lamp Post-specific lighting scenes. What are lamp-specific ones? I’m not quite sure, but it didn’t feel like many of them took advantage of the circular nature of the hardware.

you may always make your own light designs in the Govee app, available for iPhone and Android, if you have the patience to do that. To be clear, the number of effects is sufficient, just like other Govee lights, I just wish there were some exclusive ones.

The Lamp Post does have a few tricks, like sensors for brightness and motion—three of each. You can set a range of sensitivity and lighting effects to be triggered when motion is detected. You can also set automatic brightness or a default level.

The motion sensor seems handy as a potential security deterrent. I was impressed by its “far” motion sensing capabilities, up to around 20 feet, and the speed of its recognition. It was fun to make the lights flash red and blue. Still, I would be hesitant to rely on it specifically for security. It could be a nice safety feature, however, to keep you from tripping or falling when arriving home late at night.

There’s One Curious Aspect of the Lamp Post

For as straightforward as the Lamp Post is, I found its light positions around the exterior to be curious. The lights that point down can handle a range of white temperatures, from warm to cool, while the ones circling the exterior are the ones that handle the different colors.

Interestingly, you can’t activate both at the same time. You’re limited to either standard down lighting, in a range of temperatures, or the various scenes and color combinations. The Lamp Post is quite bright in both uses, so it’s not really a negative, but I found it to be a strange limitation.
