A Robot for a Very Different Task
You’re probably familiar with robot vacuums and mops that can keep your floors clean and free of debris. The Eufy E15 looks very different since it’s built to trim your lawn. Propelled by two tough wheels on the rear of the mower and a single smaller wheel at the front, the top features a number of buttons to activate settings, start mowing manually, and even stop the power in an emergency.
The most important part of the mower is right below the buttons. Along with an LED light and auto defogger, there are a pair of cameras. Those unlock the automatic mapping feature and help avoid any obstacles encountered while mowing.
Flipping over the mower will reveal the small, razor-like blades. Instead of tackling knee-high grass once a month, robot mowers like the E15 are designed to mow much more frequently. You can even use one every day to keep the grass at a consistent height. The mower cuts at a width of around 8 inches, and you can adjust the height from 1 to 3 inches using the app.
With other robot lawnmowers, getting everything set up can take a lot of time and energy. But that’s not the case with the E15. In the box, you’ll find the mower, the base station for the robot, and additional items like more mower blades. All you need to do is find a spot for the mower and base station, preferably somewhere near a power outlet. Once it’s plugged in, you can then install the roof of the base to help protect the mower from dirt, debris, and anything else.
You’ll then need to download the Eufy companion app for iOS or Android and pair it with the E15. That takes just a few minutes.
Before the mower can start working, it needs to map out the area. After previously using other robot lawnmowers, I was expecting this to be a time-consuming and frustrating operation. But I was pleasantly surprised by how simple it was. In around 10 minutes, the precision mapping was complete. My front yard is a work in progress after a large tree was cut down earlier this year, but the E15 worked wonders and only mapped anything that was grass. If there is no grass, there is just a blank spot on the map.
Once you create the first map, you can then edit it to add a multi-zone pathway. That allows you to easily have the mower work in two parts of a lawn that aren’t connected. I used that to mow my main front yard and a strip near my mailbox and street. When editing the map, you can also set a no-go zone where the robot won’t go.
Impressive Cutting, a Live Camera, and Anti-Theft Features
When the simple mapping process is complete, the best way to use the E15 is to create a schedule. You can set the day or days you want to mow and start and end time. That makes it a truly hands-off convenience. To best customize how the mower will tackle your lawn, you can adjust the edge spacing, path spacing, travel speed, and path direction.
you’re able to also start a mowing session manually and choose to mow the entire yard or just a specific zone. My yard is virtually flat, but Eufy says the mower can operate on up to a 40 percent slope.
I’ve been using the E15 for almost a month to mow my lawn, and it has done a great job. Since it’s early spring here in Texas, my lawn doesn’t grow quickly, but it looks great after the mower finishes its job. Another huge plus is that when the mower operates, it only generates 54 dB of noise. That’s comparable to a quiet office setting and won’t wake the neighbors if the mower runs early in the morning.
The mower’s battery lasts for around 90 minutes of cutting time depending on settings. Providing a complete battery charge at the base station also takes around 90 minutes.
The E15 has an IPX6 water rating, so it can easily withstand jets of water. You won’t need to worry about leaving it out in the rain, and you can also easily wash it off with just a hose. I’ve had to do that a few times, especially since the back wheels seem to get caked with mud depending on how wet the grass and other areas are. Since the mower doesn’t work at its best when the grass is wet, the E15 also has a rain sensor that will automatically turn the mower back to the base station when precipitation is detected.
Just like many robot vacuums, the E15 has strong obstacle-avoidance technology. Thanks to the same cameras that provide easy mapping, it can make sure not to run over a baseball, or get tangled with a pet or child. I tried throwing obstacles of all kinds in front of the mower, like a hose, baseball, basketball, and it avoided everything—including me—when I stood as close to the front of the mower as possible.
There are some other great bells and whistles on the E15. One of those is a live video stream. Using the Eufy app, you may see exactly what’s happening in your yard. It’s not something I’ve used often, but it’s a nice addition to the overall package.
Eufy also makes it more difficult for the E15 to be stolen. There is a Find Devices option in the app that will show you the last known location of the mower. If the mower ever leaves its work area, it will send a notification to the app via a cellular network. you may also choose that if the mower ever leaves the usual lawn, it will make a warning sound, enter a locked state, and also send a notification.
And if you don’t want to worry about any of that, there’s even a built-in AirTag compartment on the bottom of the mower.
