Benito Skinner has over a million and a half followers on TikTok and is apparently known on the internet for his celebrity impressions and comedy. If that sentence made you feel as out of touch as it did me, don’t worry—I had no idea who Skinner was before I watchedOvercompensating, a show that he created and stars in, and I only checked it out on a whim. I’m glad I did, though, because this is a hilarious show with heaps of heart.

Skinner plays Benny Scanlon, a popular kid at high school who is now beginning his freshman year at college. He’s gay and in the closet, despite everything he does to project otherwise, spurred on by frat boy Peter (Adam DiMarco ofThe White Lotusfame). He quickly makes unlikely friends with Carmen (Wally Baram, great in her first acting role after writing for comedy shows), a fellow student, and the show charts their adventures on campus as they try to discover their true selves. The show balances its tone perfectly, never afraid to shy away from sincere moments but also equally confident in making you laugh with something ridiculous.

Overcompensatinghasn’t yet been renewed for season two—as with most streaming shows these days, Amazon is likely crunching the viewing numbers. I’m hopeful it does return, since it’s fun to be in the presence of these characters, but most importantly (and annoyingly!) the first season ends on a cliffhanger. Nevertheless, even if a second season doesn’t materialize, I still recommend the series.

As seems to be the case with many TV thrillers nowadays,The Better Sisterbegan life as a novel. It stars Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks as two estranged sisters, Chloe and Nicky; the latter is an alcoholic and used to be married to lawyer Adam (Corey Stoll), with whom she has a son, while the former is now married to that very same man and living a life of luxury. Families, eh? When Adam winds up murdered, the sisters are reunited while two detectives (Kim Dickens and Bobby Naderi) investigate.

This is an ideal show to binge because it only gets better as it continues, with a twisty mystery that keeps you hooked. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it’s slick and well acted. Biel and Banks have great chemistry together, Dickens always elevates whatever she appears in, and it’s always good to see Matthew Modine (here playing a co-owner of the law firm where Adam worked).

The Better Sisteris technically a limited series, though that hasn’t stopped other shows from carrying on. Biel, who also serves as an executive producer, has said she would only want to do more if it was believable and as good as what came before. I’d be happy to watch more, though I’m also satisfied if it doesn’t, especially because it would be going beyond the book and that doesn’t always end well.

I’m a major fan ofThe Walking Dead, both the comic series by Robert Kirkman and the TV show, but I didn’t know much about one of Kirkman’s other creations calledInvincible. When I heard Amazon was adapting it into an adult animated superhero series with a voice cast including Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons, I was immediately on board. Despite there being no shortage of costumed crime fighters on the screen,Invinciblestands out in part because it’s not afraid to subvert expectations.

Yeun voices the lead character, Mark Grayson, a teenager who is trying to come to terms with his powers. He’s navigating this amidst the usual chaos of growing up and the less-relatable point of being the son of Omni-Man, an incredibly strong and supposedly great superhero. I’m hesitant to say more about the story; try to go in blind and strap yourself in for a wild ride that kicks off right from the first episode. It’s worth noting thatInvincibleis ultra violent, but if that doesn’t bother you then you’ll enjoy a show with great characters, strong voice acting, and decent 2D animation.

Along with the three seasons (with more on the way), be sure to also watchInvincible: Atom Eve, a one-off prequel episode that explores the origins of Gillian Jacobs' superhero that is equal parts heartbreaking as it is action-packed. It does a nice job of fleshing out her character and I’d love to see other specials like it.

These shows are original to Prime Video, so they shouldn’t leave the service any time soon. If you don’t manage to squeeze them all in this weekend, pop them on your watchlist to enjoy at a later date.
